From Molière to Nonsense Poetry

The virtuoso concerto for percussion solo and orchestra »Speaking Drums« by Capell-Compositeur Peter Eötvös has enjoyed worldwide success. In this work, Kapelle member Simon Etzold will not only exercise his skills as a percussionist but must also use his voice theatrically. Echoing the practice of Indian drummers, Eötvös uses nonsense poetry by Sándor Weöres to bring the soloist into contact with the instruments. After Joseph Haydn’s 90th Symphony, Christoph Gedschold will conduct Richard Strauss’s Suite »Der Bürger als Edelmann«. This neo-classical work was originally composed as incidental music in connection with the opera »Ariadne auf Naxos«, which this season can be enjoyed in a new production under Principal Conductor Christian Thielemann.

Christoph Gedschold

Christoph Gedschold, since the season 2015/16 Kapellmeister at the Leipzig Opera, was born in Magdeburg and studied piano and conducting in Leipzig and Hamburg.

After working as Kapellmeister at the Theater in Lucerne and the Staatstheater in Nuremberg, he went from 2009 to 2015 to the Badische Staatstheater in Karlsruhe, where he worked as a Kapellmeister and conducted performances like »The Greek Passion«, »Euryanthe«, »La Gioconda«, the German premiere of M. Weinberg’s opera »The Passenger«, »Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg«, »Peter Grimes«, »Lohengrin«, »Rosenkavalier« »Flying Dutchman«, »Ariadne of Naxos«, »Otello« and »Boris Godunov«.

At the Leipzig Opera, he will conduct the new productions of »Der Freischütz«, »Rusalka«, »Bluebeard’s Castle« / »I Pagliacci« and performances of »Tannhäuser«, »Madame Butterfly«, »Tosca« and »The Magic Flute« are planned.

Christoph Gedschold is a regular conducting at the Semperoper Dresden and the State Opera in Hamburg.

In Dresden he conducted in June 2017 the new production of »The Passenger« with great success, in this season he is leading

the repertoire performances of »Der Freischütz« and »The Magic Flute«. In Hamburg – after Performances of »Katja Kabanova« and »La Boheme« – he is conducting this season
»La Traviata«, »Simon Boccanegra« and »Eugen Onegin«.

In May 2015 he gave his North America debut at the Orchestre Symphonique de Montréal with Shostakovich’s 11th Symphony. He was invited back for concerts in March and April 2017.

In May 2016 he took over the musical direction for »The Passenger« with the Opera Frankfurt at the Wiener Festwochen and he was invited back for November 2018’s production of »Ariadne auf Naxos« in Frankfurt.

Christoph Gedschold has worked with many of the german and world´s top orchestras, including Leipzig Gewandhausorchester, Staatskapelle Dresden, Hamburg Philharmonic Orchestra, Orchestre Symphonique de Montréal, Frankfurt Opera Orchestra, Nationalorchestra Mannheim, Bavarian Staatsphilharmonie Nuremberg, Basel Symphony Orchestra and the New Japan Philharmonic in Tokyo.
