    Valda Wilson

    In Sydney geboren, studierte Valda Wilson zunächst an der University of Sydney, dann am Sydney Conservatorium of Music, worauf ein Engagement am Londoner National Opera Studio folgte. Sie war Finalistin verschiedener Wettbewerbe, wie dem Concours de Genève 2009 oder der Operalia 2009 und erhielt Stipendien von Stiftungen wie der Australian Music Foundation, Opera Foundation Australia, Opus 50, Joan Sutherland Society und

    Opera and Arts Support Group. Nach Engagements an nationalen und internationalen Häusern gehört sie seit der Spielzeit 2010/11 dem Jungen Ensemble der Semperoper an und interpretiert hier Partien wie Inez in »Il trovatore«, Prinzessin in »Der gestiefelter Kater« und Jenny Hildebrand in »Street Scene«.

    1st Concertmaster

    Matthias Wollong was born in Berlin in 1968 and began taking violin lessons at age five. After studying at the special school for music in Berlin, Werner Scholz accepted him into his master class in 1984.

    From 1987 till 1989, Matthias Wollong studied with legendary violinist and teacher Tibor Varga in Switzerland. He concertized in Germany, France and Switzerland as concertmaster and soloist of the Tibor Varga Chamber Orchestra during this time. His studies ended after he won the violin competition named after his teacher.

    He has been honored with numerous other awards, including first prize of the Joseph Joachim Competition in Austria.

    Matthias Wollong has appeared as a soloist under such prominent conductors as Heinz Wallberg, Adam Fischer, Rafael Fruhbeck de Burgos, Marek Janowski and Sir Colin Davis, and orchestras such as the ORF Symphony Orchestra, the RSO Berlin, Staatskapelle Dresden, Staatskapelle Weimar, and Philharmonic orchestras in Suhl, Halle, Cottbus etc.

    He has been first concertmaster of the Staatskapelle Dresden since 1999, after holding the same position with the RSO Berlin from 1991 till 1999. Since summer 2001, he has also been first concertmaster at the Bayreuth Festival.

    He has also led tours and concerts as conductor of the German Chamber Orchestra and the New Berlin Chamber Orchestra. He has appeared with the Cairo Symphony Orchestra and has led projects of the Staatskapelle Dresden (evening performances), the Berlin Youth String Orchestra and the Stringendo Zurich Orchestra.

    Matthias Wollong has received great acclaim for his many radio and CD productions, including the entire works for violin and piano of Swiss composer Ottmar Schoeck and a recording of Ernst Bloch's Violin Concerto with Vladimir Jurowski and the RSO Berlin.

    He teaches as professor at the University of Music Franz Liszt Weimar, Germany. Matthias Wollong plays an Andreas Guarneri violin from 1676.

    Jörg Faßmann

    Assistant 1st Concertmaster

    Born in Dessau in 1966, Jörg Faßmann started violin lessons at the age of five. Only four years later he gave his solo debut with an orchestra. He studied violin from 1983 to 1989 at the Leipzig Conservatory of Music under Gustav Schmahl and Klaus Hertel as well as under Reinhard Ulbricht in Dresden. He has been a prize-winning entrant in international violin competitions.

    After joining the Staatskapelle Dresden in 1987, Jörg Faßmann became deputy concertmaster in 1989. Alongside his orchestral duties, he has been a member of the Dresden String Trio since 1995, during which time the group has performed many concerts in Europe and elsewhere and produced numerous CDs. 

    In addition he has collaborated for many years with the pianist Gunther Anger, frequently appearing at chamber music festivals and performing regularly in the Semperoper Dresden. As a solo performer he has been invited to appear with a number of German orchestras on tour in Italy and in Asia.

    Furthermore, since 1991 Jörg Faßmann has been on the faculty of Dresden’s Conservatory of Music. In 2009 he was appointed to teach a masterclass at the Conservatorio Real Superior in Granada. In the same year he was invited to give concerts and workshops at the University of Wisconsin.

    Sebastian Herberg

    Principal Viola

    Sebastian Herberg was born in Potsdam in 1968, where he was received his first viola lessons at the local music school. From 1984 to 1990 he studied at the Franz Liszt College of Music in Weimar under Thomas Wünsch, principal viola of the MDR Symphony Orchestra.

    After leaving college his first engagement was with the Berlin Symphony Orchestra at Berlin’s Konzerthaus am Gendarmenmarkt, where he was principal viola from 1991 to 1994. During this time he was also a graduate student at the Hanns Eisler College of Music in Berlin, studying under Alfred Lipka. 

    In August 1994 Sebastian Herberg was appointed principal voila of the Staatskapelle Dresden. In addition he is on the faculty of the Carl Maria von Weber Conservatory of Music, where he tutors young violists.

    He has appeared in concert in Germany and abroad as a soloist as well as a member of the »Dresden String Trio«, which he joined in 1995. Sebastian Herberg has already released six CDs as a soloist and chamber musician. 

    Norbert Anger

    Concertmaster

    Norbert Anger is regarded as one of the most outstanding cellists of his generation, and has appeared as a soloist with major orchestras, such as the Orchestre de Paris, the State Symphony Orchestra of Moscow, the Staatskapelle Dresden and the Beethoven Orchester Bonn.

    He has made guest-appearances at renowned international venues, such as the Salle Gaveau, the Salle Pleyel and the Comédie des Champs-Elysées, the Moscow Philharmonic and the Semperoper Dresden, and has collaborated with conductors such as Christian Thielemann, Vladimir Spivakov, John Storgårds and Andrea Marcon. 

    Norbert Anger has impressed the music world as a laureate of many international competitions, such as the Concours Rostropovich in Paris, the Tschaikovsky Competition in Moscow, the Paulo Cello Contest in Helsinki and the Deutsche Musikwettbewerb. As a devoted chamber musician, he has worked together with many distinguished musicians, such as Hartmut Rohde, Latica Honda-Rosenberg, Wolfgang Emanuel Schmidt and David Geringas, and has performed at international music festivals, such as the Schleswig-Holstein Musik Festival, the Festspiele Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, the Ludwigsburger Schlossfestspiele and the Festival Mitte Europa.

    Norbert Anger started his musical education at Dresden’s Special School of Music Carl Maria von Weber, with Christoph Schulze. Already at an early age, he attracted public interest by winning international competitions, such as the Vibrarte Competition in Paris and the Domenico Gabrielli Competition in Berlin. He completed his studies with Wolfgang Emanuel Schmidt at the Berlin University of Arts, and also gained valuable musical input from David Geringas, Heinrich Schiff and Sir Colin Davis.

    In 2012, the German label Genuin Classics released his first CD with works by Beethoven, Brahms, Schumann and Debussy, which was highly praised by the press.

    Since 2013, Norbert Anger holds the position of First Concertmaster of the cello section of the Staatskapelle Dresden, and recently in 2015, he was also named solo cellist of the Bayreuth Festival Orchestra.

    As a laureate of the 21st Competition of the German Fund of Musical Instruments, he was entrusted with an instrument made by Andrea Guaneri, ex Ludwig Hoelscher, Cremona 1691 - a funding commitment by the Dr. Meyer-Struckmann Foundation. Presently, Norbert Anger plays a violoncello by Domenico Montagnana, ex Hekking, Venice 1721.

    Andreas Wylezol

    Principal Bass

    Andreas Wylezol was born in Berlin in 1967. As a child he took lessons in voice, violin, double bass and piano.

    He studied double bass from 1984 to 1990 at the Franz Liszt College of Music in Weimar under Horst Dieter Wenkel. While still a student he won prizes at the Markneukirchen International Competition as well as the Giovanni Bottesini Competition in Parma.

    His first orchestral experiences were gained with the Gustav Mahler Youth Orchestra from 1988 to 1989 under the direction of Claudio Abbado. Since 1989 he has been Principal Double Bass with the Staatskapelle Dresden. Andreas Wylezol is a founding member of Claudio Abbado’s Lucerne Festival Orchestra. Since 2007 he has also performed with the Bayreuth Festival Orchestra.

    Andreas Wylezol has taught at the Weimar College of Music as well as the Orchestral Academy of the Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival. 

    In 2005 he became professor at the Detmold College of Music. Since 2011 he has also coached students at the Staatskapelle Dresden’s Giuseppe Sinopoli Academy.

    He regularly performs as a soloist and has played under conductors such as Giuseppe Sinopoli and Sir Colin Davis. In June 2010 in the Semperoper he gave the first public performance together with the Staatskapelle Dresden of »Fury 2«, a concerto for double bass dedicated to him by that year’s Capell-Compositrice, Rebecca Saunders.

    Interesting chamber music projects have brought Andreas Wylezol together with the Cleveland Quartet, the Amati Quartet, the Petersen Quartet as well as pianists András Schiff and Bruno Canino.

    Andreas Wylezol has recorded for the labels Capriccio, Berlin Classics, Farao and Deutsche Schallplatten. 

    Wolfram Große

    Principal Clarinet

    Born in Weimar in 1966, Wolfram Große took clarinet lessons from the age of ten. In 1980 he became a pupil at the Spezialschule für Musik in Berlin before going on to study from 1984 to 1988 under Ewald Koch at the Hanns Eisler College of Music, also in Berlin.

    Wolfram Große’s career as an orchestral musician began in 1988 when he was became deputy principal clarinet of the Berlin Symphony Orchestra. From 1989 to 1999 he was principal clarinet at Frankfurt Opera.

    In 1999 he joined the Staatskapelle Dresden in the same position. Since 2000 Wolfram Große has also been principal clarinet of the Bayreuth Festival Orchestra. In addition to his orchestra duties he is a member of the Wind Quintet of the Staatskapelle Dresden.

    As a chamber musician and soloist Wolfram Große has won prizes at several competitions, for example in Munich, Markneukirchen and Colmar. In 2002 he was awarded the Fritz Busch Prize by the Semperoper Foundation. 

    Joachim Hans

    Principal Bassoon

    Born in Hachenburg (Westerwald) in 1972, Joachim Hans began to take lessons in the bassoon at the age of 13. His first teachers were Michael Heinen of the Rheinische Philharmonie State Orchestra and Eckhard Mayer of the State Philharmonic Orchestra of Rheinland-Palatinate.

    From 1990 to 1993 he was a member of the Rheinland-Palatinate Youth Orchestra. He attended Freiburg’s College of Music from 1992, were he studied under Karl-Otto Hartmann. In 1994 he was appointed to the Schleswig-Holstein Festival Orchestra, travelling with its chamber orchestra on diverse tours.
    Only one year later he received his first permanent appointment as sub-principal bassoon of the Badische Staatskapelle of Karlsruhe. In the same year he joined the ranks of the Essen Philharmonic Orchestra as principal bassoon. 

    Since 1996 he has held this position with the Staatskapelle Dresden, and since 1999 has also performed with the Bayreuth Festival Orchestra. As a chamber musician Joachim Hans plays in diverse groups such as the Carus Ensemble Dresden, the Wind Quintet of the Staatskapelle Dresden as well as the Kammerharmonie of the Staatskapelle Dresden.

    As a solo performer he has appeared with the Staatskapelle at symphony concerts and orchestral evening recitals under conductors Rainer Mühlbach, Georges Prêtre and Sir Colin Davis. In addition to his orchestral duties Joachim Hans is on the faculty of the Carl Maria von Weber Conservatory of Music.  

     

    Robert Langbein

    Principal Horn

    Born in Chemnitz, Robert Langbein attended the Belvedere Music School in Weimar. He continued his musical training at Weimar Music College under Rainer Heimbuch and, from 2001, in Berlin at the Hanns Eisler College of Music as well as the University of the Arts under Christian-Friedrich Dallmann. While still a student he received his first appointment as principal horn of the Konzerthausorchester Berlin before joining the Staatskapelle in the same position in 2005.

    Robert Langbein previously gained valuable experience in orchestral performance with the Gustav Mahler Youth Orchestra. He has won numerous prizes and accolades such as a first prize at the International Competition of Markneukirchen in 2004, a first prize at the Kurt Alten Competition in Hanover as well as a special prize for natural horn at the Concours de Genève. In 2010 he was awarded the Horn Prize of the Michael Schuncke Foundation in Baden-Baden. 

    In the 2013/2014 season Langbein was artist-in-residence at the Baden-Baden Philharmonic Orchestra. In addition, Robert Langbein is a popular soloist with renowned orchestras such as the Munich Chamber Orchestra, the Chamber Orchestra of Berlin, the Radio Philharmonic Hanover, the Geneva Chamber Orchestra as well as the Orchestre Symphonique de Québec.

    Robert Langbein is also active as an educator, teaching at the University of the Arts in Berlin before joining the faculty of the Carl Maria von Weber Conservatory of Music in 2009, where he became Professor for Horn in 2013. In addition he lectures on brass performance at numerous courses (Sorbian National Ensemble) and gives masterclasses (Pacific Music Festival, Sapporo, Dresden Masterclasses Music).
