11. Symphony Concert

Daniel Harding Conductor
Matthias Goerne Baritone

    Gustav Mahler

    • »Blumine«, Symphonic Movement
    • »Kindertotenlieder«

    Antonín Dvořák

    • Symphony No. 8 in G major, Opus 88

Mahler’s fascination with death was typical of an age steeped in an atmosphere of foreboding. Reflecting this hyper-sensitive aesthetic of human mortality, pervaded by a glimmer of transfiguration, Mahler’s »Kindertotenlieder« were inspired by the poems of Friedrich Rückert, who in 1833 lamented the early death of his children. The programme also Features two works of Arcadian beauty: Mahler’s »Blumine«, which exudes a rustic air, and Dvořák’s folksy Bohemian Eighth Symphony.
