Programme 2017/2018 released

During the annual press conferrence the Sächsische Staatskapelle released the plans for the season 2017/2018 on the 20th of March 2017.

Christian Thielemann will open the season with Anton Bruckners first Symphony in c minor, a work that has only been played three times yet in the concerts of the Staatskapelle. It is a premiere for Christian Thielemann to conduct this piece as well as the third Symphony by Gustav Mahler, which will be performed during the 7th Symphony Concert. The solo part will be sung by Elīna Garanča. In the 10th Symphony Concert  Christian Thielemann will perform with the new Artist-in-Residence, Denis Matsuev. The programme will feature works by Weber, Brahms and Liszt.

Christian Thielemann will also conduct three Non-subscription Concerts: On the 2nd of December 2017 he will conduct the ZDF-Adventskonzert, on the 30th und 31st of December he will lead the New Year's Concert of the Staatskapelle Dresden. On the 1st of May 2018 he will celebrate the 200th anniversary of the Sächsischen Staatsopernchor; conducting »Deutsche Requiem« by Johannes Brahms.

Several Tours will bring the Staatskapelle Dresden to Paris, München, Vienna, Milan and many other great venues.

The programme of the Salzburg Easter Festival 2018 will be published on the 9th of April.

Denis Matsuev, the new Artist-in-Residence, will open his residence on the 8th of October with a Piano Recital at the Semperoper. He will perform at several occasions including a tour with the Staatskapelle and he will be soloists in June 2018 at a special concert at the evening before Shostakovich Festival Gohrisch . 

The new Composer-in-Residence will be Estonian Arvo Pärt, whose Oeuvre will be featured in several concerts (conducted by Donald Runnicles, Myung-Whun Chung and Paavo Järvi) as well as in a special Portrait Concert. 19 works composed by the Composer-in-Residence will be performed throughout the whole season.

Philippe Herreweghe and Antonio Pappano will make their debut conducting the Staatskapelle as well as returning conductors like Alan Gilbert, Robin Ticciati und Omer Meir Wellber. Of course the Conductor Laureate Herbert Blomstedt will also return to conduct the Staatskapelle Dresden.

Several soloists like Isabelle Faust, Jan Lisiecki and Martin Helmchen will also make their debut with the Staatskapelle.

The Evening Recitals will also feature debutants like Rafael Payare, Dmitri Jurowski, Carlo Goldstein and John Storgårds with programmes from Johann Sebastian Bach to Ligeti, Liebermann, Matthus and Pärt.

The Gustav Mahler Youthorchestrawill perform two concerts in Dresden this season. On the 2nd of September 2017 under the lead of Ingo Metzmacher together with pianist Jean-Yves Thibaudet and in February 2017 conducted by Vladimir Jurowski with works by Béla Bartók and Dmitri Shostakovich.
