Two first performances of pieces by Weinberg

The extensive oeuvre of the Polish Composer Mieczysław Weinberg (1919-1996) has only found its way into the international music life very recently.

Weinberg's biography includes great misfortune (forced migration because of the National Socialists, antisemitic agitation in the Soviet Union), which he processed through his music so full of tragedy, but also sublimated humour.

In the 2nd Evening Recital of the Sächsische Staatskapelle Dresden on the 30th of January 2017 two of his works will have their first performances in Germany: his second Flute Concerto opus 148 as well as the Symphony no. 7 opus 81 for cembalo and strings.

The solo part of the Flute Concerto will be played by Andreas Kißling who has the position of the solo flute in the Staatskapelle since 2010. The cembalo part in Weinberg's seventh Symphony will be performed by longtime solo répétiteur and former director of studies Jobst Schneiderat. The musical lead will be taken by Thomas Sanderling who will return to the conductor's stand of the Sächsische Staatskapelle Dresden after more than 40 years of abstinence.

Thomas Sanderling is the eldest Sohn of Kurt Sanderling, the former principle conductor of the Staatskapelle Dresden. He is regularly working with prestigious orchestras like the Philharmonie Orchestra London, the Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks and the St. Petersburg Philharmonics. He had a close friendship with the composer Dmitri Shostakovich. He also is taking a stand for the works of Mieczysław Weinbergs whose last opera »Der Idiot« was performed for the first time by Sanderling in Mannheim in 2013. In 2015 he established the International Weinberg Society together with violinist Linus Roth.

Also the Shostakovich Festival Gohrisch in June 2017 is dedicated to the oeuvre of Weinberg with a programmatic focus and several premiere performances. Moreover, Weinberg's late discovered music theatre major work »Die Passagierin« will have its Dresden premiere on the stage of the Semperoper on the 24th of June 2017.
