Although his debut on the conductor’s rostrum came in 2003 with the Orchestre National de France, it was one year later that the Paris native Fabien Gabel first enjoyed wider international attention by winning the prestigious Donatella Flick Conducting Competition in London. The competition prizewinner is offered the chance to conduct the London Symphony Orchestra, leading in this case to an appointment as assistant conductor to the LSO for the following two seasons. In the meantime Fabien Gabel has worked with many other international orchestras. Originally heading for a career as an orchestral trumpeter, his first steps in conducting were at the Aspen Summer Festival of 2002 where he was taught by David Zinman. Subsequent tutors and mentors have included Bernard Haitink, Sir Colin Davis and Paavo Järvi.
