In November 2009 the Slovak conductor Juraj Valcuha became director of the Orchestra Sinfonica Nazionale della RAI Turin. After studying composition and conducting in Bratislava, St. Petersburg and Paris, he made his professional debut in 2005 with the Orchestre National de France. This quickly led to conducting appointments with the Philharmonia Orchestra London, the Rotterdam and Oslo Philharmonic Orchestras, the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, Leipzig’s Gewandhaus Orchestra as well as the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra. Valcuha is also in great demand as a conductor of opera. In September 2009 he opened the new season of the Munich Philharmonic Orchestra, and shortly afterwards made his debut with the Staatskapelle at an evening recital. Now he is returning to the Semperoper to direct the Staatskapelle’s 11th Symphony Concert.
