Michail Jurowski

Born in Moscow in 1945, Michail Jurowski’s family enjoyed a close friendship with Dmitri Shostakovich, with whom the young Michail regularly played piano duets. This experience left a deep impression on Jurowski, and till today he is regarded as a conductor with a keen understanding of the composer’s music. While still a student he gained valuable experience by assisting Gennady Rozhdestvensky with his work at Moscow’s State Radio and Television Symphony Orchestra. Subsequent appointments took him to the Semperoper Dresden, Leipzig Opera as well as the Deutsche Oper in Berlin. In the autumn of 2010 Jurowski was one of the leading lights at the first International Shostakovich Festival in the Saxon village of Gohrisch. And at the forthcoming second festival he will appear once again on the Staatskapelle rostrum at another evening recital in Gohrisch.
