Since 1964, the Staatskapelle and the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra have organised annual collaborative concerts in the field of chamber music. Now, the Staatskapelle’s great chamber music tradition is enriched with a performance by the Gewandhaus Wind Quintet – probably the oldest such group of its kind still in existence – at the 5th Chamber Music Evening. Founded in 1896, the Leipzig musicians explore the traditional quintet repertoire as well as contemporary works. And there are close links between Dresden’s musical history and that of the ensemble: none other than the later Dresden Kapellmeister Rudolf Kempe was the quintet’s principal oboist during his time in Leipzig.
