Special Concert with Sir András Schiff

Sir András Schiff Piano

Johann Sebastian Bach

  • Brandenburg Concerto No. 5 in D major, BWV 1050

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart

  • Piano Concerto No. 23 A major KV 488

Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy

  • Symphony No. 4 A major op. 90 »Italienische«

Out of the spirit of opera

To Sir András Schiff, Mozart’s piano concertos »form a perfect synthesis of opera, symphony, and chamber music«. This is especially true of the late A major Concerto, which was written in 1785 following a hiatus from the »flood of piano concertos«. His work on »Figaro« broke the creative dam, leading to large-scale works in which the clarinet was for the first time integrated into the orchestra. K. 488 is also the only concerto to feature an exceptionally slow middle movement: the melody in the Adagio recalls an operatic aria. Bach’s Brandenburg Concerto and Mendelssohn’s »Italian« Symphony bookend the concerto.

Piano recitals are an important part of his activity, especially the cyclical performances of the piano works of Bach, Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert, Chopin, Schumann and Bartók. Since 2004, Sir András Schiff has performed the complete cycle of Ludwig van Beethoven's piano sonatas in

chronological order in more than 20 cities. Their live recordings from the Zurich Tonhalle on CD (ECM) received the highest awards.
