Thomas Käppler, born in Dresden in 1959, began his musical musical training in singing and piano at the age of ten as a chapel boy at the “Kapellknabeninstitut Dresden”. He studied music from 1975 to 1981 at the Carl Maria von Weber College of Music under Peter Sondermann and Konrad Müller.

In 1981, Thomas Käppler was invited to join the Saxon State Orchestra Dresden as a percussionist, and he has been its principal timpanist since 1985.

In addition to his orchestral activities, he is also intensively involved in chamber music. He has performed with the chamber orchestras Virtuosi Saxoniae, Dresdner Kapellsolisten, and the Dresdner Barockorchester since their founding, both in concert and on CD recordings.

In 2005, Thomas Käppler was awarded the Fritz Busch Prize by the Foundation for the Promotion of the Semperoper.
