  • Sinfonie Nr. 9 e-Moll op. 95 »Aus der Neuen Welt«

An evening that invokes the spirit of Romanticism: the overture to »Der Freischütz« introduces a key work from the era, whose magic spell was cast early in the Dresden career of Carl Maria von Weber. Robert Schumann’s Piano Concerto in A minor combines poetic expression with formal clarity. First performed in Dresden in December 1845, the work sees the piano and orchestra enter into a lively dialogue. The programme concludes with Mendelssohn’s »Scottish« symphony, an atmospheric piece permeated by a sense of vastness, melancholy and hymn-like power. Drawing inspiration from a visit to Edinburgh’s Holyrood Palace in 1829, the young composer did not complete the symphony until twelve years later.

Myung-Whun Chung

Since the 2012/2013 season, Myung-Whun Chung has been the first artist in the history of the Staatskapelle to hold the title of Principal Guest Conductor, confirming the close relationship between the South Korean maestro and the Staatskapelle. Since November 2001 he has conducted many symphony concerts in the Semperoper as well as a new production of Verdi’s »Don Carlo«. In addition, he has accompanied the orchestra on tours through Europe, to the USA and Asia.

Alongside his work on the conductor’s rostrum, Myung-Whun Chung frequently performs as a chamber musician with Kapelle players, for example in September 2020 in Schubert’s »Trout Quintet« at the Semperoper. In previous seasons in Dresden, Chung has explored the oeuvre of Gustav Mahler, conducting performances of the Symphonies Nos. 1, 2, 4 to 6 and 9 in the Semperoper. He has also conducted works by Gioachino Rossini, Gabriel Fauré, Olivier Messiaen, Johannes Brahms and Antonín Dvořák at Staatskapelle concerts.

Myung-Whun Chung’s long and outstanding musical career is marked by his recent appointment as Music Director Designate of Teatro alla Scala (from 2027). He is the inaugural Direttore Emeritus at Filarmonica della Scala in Milano; the inaugural Principal Guest Conductor of Dresden Staatskapelle; Honorary Music Director at Tokyo Philharmonic Orchestra and Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France in Paris. Maestro Chung is also the Artistic Director at the new Busan Opera and Concert Hall in South Korea which hosted its grand opening Festival in June 2025.

Maestro's 25/26 season includes extensive international touring with Filarmonica della Scala, Tokyo Philharmonic and Dresden Staatskapelle, Verdi's Requiem with Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia as well as symphonic weeks with his titled orchestras. As Music Director Designate of La Scala, he conducts Bizet's Carmen, as well as reuniting once again with the Filarmonica for a symphonic programme including play-directing Beethoven's Triple Concerto and Brahms' Symphony no. 4.

Maestro Chung held titles as Music Director at the Saarbrücken Radio Symphony Orchestra, Principal Guest Conductor of Teatro Comunale of Florence, Principal Conductor of the Orchestra of the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia in Rome and Music Director of the Opéra de Paris-Bastille.

Maestro Chung is the recipient of numerous prizes, including Commandeur de Légion d’Honneur from France, Commentatore dell’ordine della stella d’Italia, the Premio Abbiati for outstanding conducting at La Fenice in Venice, and Keumkwan, the highest culture award of the Korean government. In 2008 Mo. Chung was designated the first conductor named as Goodwill Ambassador for the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF).
