Helmut Fuchs was born in Oberndorf near Salzburg in 1984 and received his first trumpet lessons at the age of six from Martin Mühlfellner at the Salzburg Music School. In 2001, he switched to Igor Oder, who also taught him during his time with the military band in Salzburg (2003-2004).

In 2004 Helmut Fuchs began studying trumpet at the Mozarteum University in Salzburg and in 2005 moved to the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna with Josef Pomberger. In addition to his concert training, he also studied instrumental pedagogy trumpet. He completed both degree programmes with distinction in 2012 and 2013 respectively.

During his studies, he already performed as a solo trumpet player in the most renowned orchestras in Europe, including the Berlin Philharmonic, the Vienna Philharmonic, the Orchestre Philharmonique de Monte-Carlo and the Vienna Symphony Orchestra.

In 2014, he was engaged as a trumpeter at the Opéra de Nice and has been principal trumpeter of the Staatskapelle Dresden since 2016. He is a guest professor at the Lübeck University of Music and a lecturer at the Giuseppe Sinopoli Academy, the orchestral school of the Staatskapelle Dresden.

Helmut Fuchs is a member of the ensembles ‘The Philharmonie Brass’ (with conductors Riccardo Muti and Tugan Sokhiev) and ‘phil Blech Wien’, as well as a welcome guest with the renowned ensemble ‘German Brass’.

Helmut Fuchs regularly appears as a soloist at home and abroad, his repertoire includes the Concerto for Piano, Trumpet and Strings by Dmitri Shostakovich, the Concerto for Trumpet and Orchestra by Joseph Haydn as well as the Second Brandenburg Concerto and ‘Jauchzet Gott in allen Landen’ by Johann Sebastian Bach. He can also be heard as a soloist with the Staatskapelle Dresden and works with renowned artists such as Christian Thielemann, Diana Damrau, Denis Matsuev and Viktoria Postnikova.

 

Already during his studies up until now he is substituting in some of the most prestigious orchestras of Austria (like the Orchestra of the Vienna State Opera, the Vienna Philharmonics, the Tonkünstler-Orchester Niederösterreich, the Vienna Symphonics, the Bruckner Orchester Linz as well as the Mozarteumorchester Salzburg).

In 2014 he joined the Opera de Nice as trumpeter and since 2016 he is Solo trumpeter at the Sächsische Staatskapelle Dresden.
