Frank van Nooy

Born in 1960 in Quedlinburg, Frank van Nooy took a “detour” via a symphonic wind orchestra before attending the Hanns Eisler Academy of Music in Berlin, where he studied under Harald Winkler.

From 1986 until its dissolution in July 1992, he was 2nd/3rd trombonist in the Berlin Radio Symphony Orchestra, and from 1992 to 1995 he was second trombonist with the Berlin Symphony Orchestra. He began his musical future in Dresden in 1995 as principal bass trombonist with the Dresden Philharmonic. Since 2002, he has been principal bass trombonist with the Staatskapelle Dresden, and therefore follows in the footsteps of the legendary Hans Hombsch.

In addition to his orchestral activities, Frank van Nooy is also a dedicated chamber musician. He is a founding member of the Berlin trombone quartet “Four in Hand,” with which he won first prize at the International Brass Chamber Music Competition in Passau in 1991. In 1995, he and his colleagues founded the Courtois Trombone Quartet in Dresden. As a member of Capella Sagittariana, he is also intensively involved in music with historical performance practice.

Frank van Nooy is also known as an arranger for brass ensembles of all kinds, especially for the above-mentioned trombone quartets—and not least for SemperBrass Dresden, of which he has been a member since 2003. In 2005, he was appointed lecturer for bass trombone and chamber music at the Carl Maria von Weber University of Music in Dresden.
