Torsten Hoppe

Torsten Hoppe was born in Dresden and received his first double bass lessons from his father, Roland Hoppe. After graduating from Dresden's Kreuzschule, he continued his musical education in Bernd Haubold's class at the Carl Maria von Weber University of Music in Dresden. After becoming a member of the Gustav Mahler Youth Orchestra under the direction of Claudio Abbado, Torsten Hoppe received his first permanent engagement as principal double bassist with the Stuttgart Philharmonic Orchestra. He completed further studies with Günter Klaus (Frankfurt am Main).

He has been a member of the double bass section of the Sächsische Staatskapelle Dresden since 1996 and its principal double bassist since 2003. Furthermore, he is dedicated to early music, performing with ensembles such as the Batzdorfer Hofkapelle. Torsten Hoppe has been a member of the Lucerne Festival Orchestra under Claudio Abbado since 2008 and has also performed with the Bayreuth Festival Orchestra since the summer of 2009.
